I’d be interested to see where those pics were taken from.
There are professional marine trainers who, among other things, teach the whales to blow bubble rings on cue. It’s neat, but it’s more an evidence of the amazing power of training than it is of the “beautiful nature” of normal behavior. I encourage anyone interested in learning more to google “positive reinforcement training” and “clicker training” plus keywords such as marine training or aquarium.
don’t quote me on this but i live in atlanta and i was told by an employee at the aquarium that there was only one beluga whale that had been observed blowing bubble rings and through his contact with some females in an attempt to have them mate in captivity he taught several other individuals how to blow bubble rings as well, such amazing creatures!
Studies have shown that there are certain groups of these animals, dolphins included, which actually perform this activity in the wild, proving that these animals, along with humans and other primates create their own tools. In this case, these bubble rings are just for sport!
Actually, in Hamada city in Japan there are a few beluga whales that routinely blow bubble rings for show at the AQUAS aquarium. I think it’s 2 or 3 times a week they perform.
